Gabon has postponed its legislative elections scheduled to take place in December to mid 2017,the interior minister said on Saturday citing lack of finances.

In a statement by the Minister of the Interior Lambert Matha, the action was taken by the Constitutional Court due to “inadequate financial allocations provided for this purpose.”

The vote will now take place on July 29, 2017, with parliament extended until then, the statement added.

The court took into account “unexpected expenses following the violence recorded after the election of the President of the Republic” in September, the Union daily said Saturday.

The re-election of President Ali Bongo Ondimba in August provoked rare violence in the oil rich nation.

Bongo’s Democratic Party (PDG) has an overwhelming majority (114 out of 120) in the current legislative assembly which was elected in December 2011.
