With three days before the December 7 presidential election, Primenewsghana.com weighs the chances of President John Mahama, the presidential candidate of the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) against Nana Akufo-Addo of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

Here are five reasons why Mahama may emerge winner of the election on Wednesday.

1. Incumbency advantage

As president, Mahama has unlimited financial resources at his disposal with which he can prosecute the elections. He can outspend Akufo-Addo on every front, including in campaigning and buying influence.

His incumbency advantage also enables him to clandestinely employ the human and logistical resources of state institutions such as the Bank of Ghana, Ghana Police Service, Ghana Army and National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) to aid his campaign.

1. Likability

The president is generally deemed to be more presidential, charming and youthful than his rival, Akufo-Addo.

He is generally more likable, making him more appealing to women and floating voters. At the end of the day, we are going to have people who will vote for Mahama not because they think he is competent; not because they think he is smart; but simply because

3. Massive infrastructure development

In his four years as president, Mahama undertook massive infrastructural projects across the country. The most expensive of the projects include the Kwame Nkrumah Interchange in Accra; the Kasoa Interchange in the Central Region; the Ridge Hospital project in Accra; the Kotokuraba Market project in the central Region; the Komenda Sugar factory in the Central Region; The Cape Coast Stadium and the Kejetia Market project in Kumasi.

These projects have impacted the lived of thousands of people across the country and may help the president maintain or even increase his support in the beneficiary communities.

4. Massive campaign spending

President John Mahama has invested millions of dollars in this campaign. He is outspending the NPP on every level. He has taken control of the airwaves with his adverts. In other instances, the NDC has distributed gifts such as outboard motors in strategic communities. The NPP has described this as vote buying, but the governing party doesn’t seem to care. This could well work out in Mahama’s favour on Wednesday.
