My constituent’s financial demands are unbearable - Youngest MP

The Member of Parliament (MP) for Kwabre East who is also the youngest MP in Ghana, Francisca Oteng-Mensah has stated that the financial demands mounted on MPs by their constituents are unbearable.

Speaking on Abusua FM, Hon. Francisca Oteng-Mensah said, her constituents have started making financial demands even though she is yet to earn her first salary as an MP.

“Even though I have not started receiving any salary, I have started paying fees… [and] I have started paying hospital bills and a whole lot.”

According to the Presidential Committee on Emoluments which was set up by President John Mahama in accordance with the constitution of Ghana, all Article 71 office holders are to enjoy a 10% increase in their monthly salary and must be retrospective to cover 2013.

Per the committee’s report which was approved by 6th Parliament, ,members of the 7th Parliament under the 4th Republic are expected to take home over GHS 15,000 as monthly salary.
