Independent Prosecutor will be a delegation from the A-G - Gloria Akuffo reveals

The Independent Public Prosecutor as proposed by the President Nana Akufo-Addo and his New Patriotic Party (NPP) will be a delegation of the Attorney-General, Ms. Gloria Akuffo, Attorney-General and Justice-designate has revealed.

According to her, the Independent Prosecutor would be acting on behalf of the Attorney-General just like bodies the police do but the only difference will be that his or her only focus will be on public corruption as means to restore confidence in the department.

President Akufo-Addo during campaigning had chastised the then ruling government led by the National Democratic Congress' (NDC) John Mahama for its lackadaisical attitude in the fight against corruption and promised to establish a special office for an independent prosecutor to help root out corruption.

Explaining the role of the Independent Prosecutor to the Appointments Committee of Parliament during her turn at vetting on Saturday, she disclosed that the Independent Prosecutor's office will be created by an Act of Parliament and they'll be nominated by the president".

She said the Independent Prosecutor will be a delegation of the AG. It is to restore public confidence in the AG Department

"There have been a lot of calls for a solution to corruption, the proposed Independent Prosecutor is one way and we intend to do it in a way that will not fall foul of the constitution", she added.
