The Electoral Commission (EC) has blamed challenges with the collation process for the delay in declaring major election results both in the presidential and parliamentary election.
At a press conference held in Accra, the EC chairperson, Madam Charlotte Osei, said the electronic machines they were using to transmit results from the collation centres appeared to have been compromised, prompting the commission to direct election officials to switch to a manual process.
She rejected demands by members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) for her to declare the presidential election, which the party said their candidate, Nana Akufo-Addo, had won.
Madam Osei said the EC said its does not declare results based on what political parties collate.
She stressed that the commission had a legal procedure that it follows in declaring results, adding that the commission was focused on presenting credible and accurate elections.
“Accuracy is more important than speed,†she said.
The commission chairperson added that it had only been 24 hours since polls ended and the Ec was not behind schedule in terms of declaring results.
She said, for instance, that it took 72 hours before the 2012 elections were declared by the commission.
Madam Osei went to emphasise that the commission could not manipulate or change the votes in any way.
She said the EC would declare accurate results that would reflected the will of the people of Ghana.
