The BBC, in the midst of Africa World Cup qualifiers on Saturday, named their African player of the year shortlist for 2016.

They included, Liverpool’s Sadio Mane, Leicester City winger Riyad Mahrez, Manchester City midfielder Yaya Toure, West Ham’s Andre Ayew and Borussia Dortmund striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.

Though Ghanaians would be hoping that Andre Ayew would pick the award, the likes of Mahrex and Aubameyang appears favourite to win the award following their impressive form within the year.

The reigning African Best Player has been remarkable for Dortmund while Mahrez remains a key member of the Leicester team after winning the English Premier League best player for last season.

But the appearance of Yaya Toure on the list remains a mystery for some football fans who believe the player did not deserve to have his name on the list.

The winner will be decided by fans from across the world, who have until 18:00 GMT on November 28 to vote for their choice.

The 2016 recipient of the award will be announced on Monday, December 12, live on BBC Focus on Africa TV and radio, starting from 17:35 GMT.

The BBC Sport and BBC Africa websites will also carry the announcement.
