His inclusion in the final 23- man squad named by coach Avram Grant for the Africa Cup of Nations(AFCON) raised eyebrows as many Ghanaians and football pundits questioned his presence in the Black Star team.

But after he was handed a start in Ghana’s friendly on Tuesday against Bunyodkor, the Schalke 04 striker, Bernard Tekpetey is gradually proving his critics wrong.

Tekpetey was very instrumental for Ghana in their 2-0 win as he played for 79 minutes before he was substituted by Ebenezer Assifuah.

He contributed to Ghana’s second goal as his strike hit the post before Frank Acheampong followed up to score.

The 19-year-old is expected to feature in Ghana’s next friendly scheduled for Friday before they head to Gabon.

Obviously, the player seems to be in the long-term plan of coach Avram Grant as far as the striking department is concerned.

Grant’s contract with the club would end after the AFCON in Ghana and renewal is subject to Ghana’s performance at Gabon.

Though there are speculations that the coach would be heading to China after his contract ends with Ghana, the GFA might also consider maintaining him if he wins the AFCON.
