The Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC) has warned local stations to desist from broadcasting the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Gabon without authorization.

Speaking to the media in Accra today, Acting Director of Television at GBC, Johnny Aryeetey said GBC remains the only official licensee of Television and Radio Broadcast Rights for transmitting the AFCON 2017 competition in Ghana.

The station he said has not granted Right to any Television or Radio station in Ghana to broadcast the tournament.

Therefore, any Television or Radio Station interested in broadcasting or running commentary on the live matches must contact GBC for the Rights.

He said “we have realized that some broadcasters are illegally showing the matches and ask that they put a stop to it.”

“It is important for all to respect the laws associated with Broadcasting Rights and follow proper procedure if they wish to broadcast the games,” he stated.

According to him, GBC would be forced to take legal actions against those stations if they continue without proper procedure.

“We are ready to work with any station that would seek license from us to broadcast the games and expect the right thing to be done,” he stressed.

He added that “any institution or individual interested in organizing an Outdoor Public Viewing Activation must seek the necessary authorization from GBC,”he stated.

GBC has acquired the exclusive Free-to-Air Terrestrial broadcast rights in English and all Ghanaian languages for the AFCON.
