The Black Stars of Ghana beat the Cranes of Uganda by a lone goal in the first Group D match of the Africa Cup of Nations(AFCON) in Port Gentil, Gabon.

The Stars scored the only goal of the match through Andre Ayew's penalty in the 32nd minute after Asamoah Gyan was fouled by his marker, Isaac Isinde in the penalty box.

It was a game of two halves as Uganda came back strongly in the second half hoping the get the equalizer but the pair of Daniel Amartey and John Boye were resolute at defense.

The Stars also struggled to get a second goal though they created very good chances with Jordan Ayew very wasteful in attack.

Christian Atsu however, had a very good game and managed to get some shots on target but could not beat the Uganda goalkeeper.

He was also named the Most Valuable Player of the Match for his good display at the flanks and would be hoping to continue his impressive display going into the next game.

But Defender Baba Rahman was stretched off the pitch after he picked up an injury while trying to win a 50/50 ball with a Ugandan midfielder.

He was replaced by Frank Acheampong and that was the only substitution in the first half but the second half saw two changes for the Stars with Jordan Ayew replaced by Afriyie Acquah while Gyan was pulled out for Agyemang Badu.

In the end however, statistics shown that both teams enjoyed 50/50 possession and Ghana currently have three points going into their next game against Egypt on Saturday.
