Monday morning, the man who fired a gunshot at George Zimmerman was sentenced to 20 years in prison for attempted murder.

Matthew Apperson claimed that he had shot in self-defense after Zimmerman pulled a gun on him during a road rage incident. Zimmerman, meanwhile, testified that Apperson had chased him and was shooting to kill.

The jury convicted Apperson of attempted second-degree murder and shooting into an occupied vehicle and aggravated assault.

Twenty years is the mandatory minimum sentence for shooting at another person.

In 2013, Zimmerman was acquitted in the 2012 fatal shooting of unarmed 17-year-old Trayvon Martin. The controversial Florida shooting set off national protests around race and the ways in which it impacted the case. The shooting would also give way for what would be known as the Black Lives Matter movement reports thegrio.com.
