The Supreme Court's order for the freezing of some government accounts has not affected government business contrary to earlier reports to that effect, Deputy Minister for Finance, Mona Quartey has stated.

The Supreme Court's order was necessitated by an action filed by non-bank financial institution, NDK Financial Services over a debt it is owed by the government.

According to reports, government entered into a contract with a private businessman to roll out a rural electrification project between 2005 and 2006 who obtained funding for the project from NDK and government was to pay the contract sum into a joint account held by the financial institution and the private businessman but failed to do so leading to the debt.

News of the freeze on the Consolidated and Treasure accounts emerged on Tuesday with fears that government business was going to grind to a halt.

But in an interview on Joy FM's Super Morning Show, Mrs Quartey said "well very simply, we are doing well. We actually have not felt any impact on any freeze".

According to her, though they were aware of the matter, "we are not even aware of the accounts to be frozen" but "no accounts have actually been frozen that affects government business".

"I think that is a situation that is being handled by the Attorney General's department but in terms of the operational accounts between the Ministry of Finance and the Controller and Accountant General's Department is still operating", she added.

Assuring that the matter was not an issue to worry about, she said "to the best of our knowledge the Consolidated and Treasure accounts have not been frozen and government business is still running".
