The government has assured Ghanaians that the Accra-Nsawam Railway line will be opened for commercial operations by the end of this year (2019).

The Railway line is currently undergoing test runs to ensure its safety, readiness, and compatibility before commercial operations take off.

On the assumption of power of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) administration, President Akufo-Addo created the Railways Development Ministry to revamp that sector to accelerate development.

It is to reduce congestion, increase the lifespan of the roads and curb the risk of transporting heavy freight.

The rehabilitation of the railway lines has started. Currently, the Accra-Tema stretch through to the harbour is operating while the Accra-Nsawam line is undergoing test runs after the derailment during a test run on the 12th of September 2019.

Speaking Radio Ghana today November 6, 2019, the Deputy Minister of Railways Development and MP for Asante Akim North, Andy Appiah-Kubi said all the rehabilitation works on that stretch have been completed and commercial operations will resume soon.

Mr. Appiah-Kubi said the Nsawam-Koforidua stretch is undergoing rehabilitation and gave the assurance that it will become operational before the close of the year.
