Ashanti Regional Minister, Simon Osei-Mensah has alleged that the youth who were involved in clashes between Zongo youth and Asante youth at Ahwiaa were influenced by Tramadol.

Mr. Osei-Mensah explained that since most of the youth used to patronize hard drugs such as wee and cocaine and since they can no longer get access to them, they have resorted to taking tramadol, which is influencing their thinking abilities negatively.

He further urged that the Food and Drugs Authority carefully scrutinize the product and consider banning it from the market.

His comments come on the heels of a clash between Asante youth and Islamic youth in Ahwiaa, which led to the death of a 20-year-old man.

Several other individuals are reported to have sustained machete wounds in the conflict which happened on Monday, March 19, 2018, in Ahwiaa.

Schools shut down following the conflict in Ahwiaa

Schools in Ahwiaa in the Kwabre East district of the Ashanti region have been closed down as a result of renewed clashes between some Zongo youth and Asante youth.

On Monday, parents were seen rushing to schools to pick up their wards as police officers also conveyed pupils from their schools to their homes.

The District Chief Executive (DCE) for the area Nana Osei Bonsu said the move has become necessary to protect the pupils from any attacks until the matter is resolved.

Fifty-one people have been arrested and will be arraigned before the court Tuesday, March 20, 2018.

The police have tightened security in the area.
