Bishop Daniel Obinim, the founder of the International God’s Way Church, has been charged with physical assault for whipping two teenagers in his church after accusing them of having sex.

Obinim had earlier reported to the Domestic Violence and Victims’ Support Unit of the Ghana Police Service in Tema but was transferred to the police headquarters in Accra.

The bishop is now set to be prosecuted in the coming days.

In a video which has gone viral on Facebook, Obinim could be seen beating the teenagers – whose names were not immediately known – with what appeared to be a belt.

He accused the girl, as he lashed her, of having sex and getting pregnant instead of focusing on work as an apprentice.

Whipping the boy for allegedly impregnating the girl, Obinim questioned how he was going to take of her and the baby since he (the boy) was unemployed.

The video provoked a firestorm of controversy and outrage on social media, with many Ghanaians calling for criminal prosecution to be brought against the bishop.

News that Obinim has been charged is likely to be well-received by the members of the public who feel that his excesses have become too much.
