Maxwell Kofi Jumah, a leading member of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), says the British high commissioner to Ghana, Jon Benjamin, is a fool.

Speaking on Accra-based Neat FM on Monday, Kofi Jumah said:

“So if Britain wants someone as a high commissioner to Ghana, must they appoint a fool like Jon Benjamin as their commissioner to Ghana? That man is a fool.”

His insult comes after Mr Benjamin denied reports on social media that the Central Regional chairman of the National Democratic Congress, Allotey Jacobs, had been arrested at the Heathrow Airport by the UK National Crime Agency for suspected money laundering and cocaine trafficking on Sunday.

Mr Benjamin said on Twitter: “I can confirm that the rumour about Mr. Jacobs is definitely not true . . . Mr. Allotey Jacobs transited Heathrow this morning without incident.”

This denial appears to have infuriated Kofi Jumah, who apparently felt the commissioner was involved in a cover-up on behalf of the government.

His attempt to launch more verbal attacks on Mr Benjamin was resisted by Kwasi Aboagye, the host of the show he was speaking on.

This prompted Kofi Jumah to say, ‘If you don’t want me to talk, then bye’, before hanging up.
