The Republic of Ghana has formally made a request to the government of Latvia to assist her in identifying a suitable person in Latvia who will be appointed as an Honorary Consul of the Republic of Ghana to Latvia, as part of measures to help boost economic cooperation between the two countries.

Latvia has an Honorary Consul in Ghana who is resident in Kumasi. On the contrary, Ghana's Ambassador to Germany, Gina Blay, has concurrent accreditation to Latvia, making it difficult for potential Latvian businesses and investors who may require consular services to receive same in real time since they have to embark on a journey to Berlin, Germany.

Speaking at a working dinner for the Latvian business community with the State Secretary of the Ministry of Economics of Latvia, Ēriks Eglītis, as the special Guest of Honour, Minister for Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey, observed that to shore up economic cooperation between Ghana and Latvia, it is extremely important that consular service is brought to the doorstep of the Latvian people. To that end, the Minister made a request to the government of Latvia through the State Secretary for the Ministry of Economics to assist the government of Ghana to identify a suitable person who would be appointed to the office of an Honorary Consul of the Republic of Ghana to Latvia.

The State Secretary of the Ministry of Economics of Latvia, Ēriks Eglītis, welcomed the request and assured that he will collaborate with the Foreign Ministry of Latvia to assist Ghana in settling on someone for the role. The State Secretary added that his country is excited about the new prospects of economic cooperation between Ghana and Latvia. He assured that they, on their part, will do everything within their power to make the new window of opportunity opened to the two countries a success.

The Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Investment Promotion Centre, Yoofi Grant, in a brief remark indicated that the appointment of an Honorary Consul of Ghana in Latvia would invariably help to kick start engagements in Latvia in order to ascertain what opportunities there are and the immediate steps that can be taken to realize Latvian investments in Ghana on a large scale.
