Patients who visited the Pantang Psychiatric Hospital in Accra have been left to their fate as health officials declined to provide any form of assistance following their sit down strike which begun today.

The action which is in protest of hospital lands being encroached upon by private developers is expected to continue until government responds to their plea.

Patients who visited the facility this morning were turned away and left to ponder upon their next source of health care with their relatives. About 60 patients were this morning left unattended to.

Some have decided to resort to pharmacies and other health facilities in Accra to get treatment while others returned home, hoping the strike would end so they could return for treatment.

"I came here this morning to get medicine but they have refused to attend to me and I do not know what to do. My medicine is finished and it would be very difficult for me to sleep without the medicine,"a frustrated patient narrated.

About 700 hundred workers of the Pantang Hospital sat idle in groups chatting the day away as patients lurked around,

The hospital staff say they would on Wednesday embark on a demonstration if the issue is not addressed as the encroachment is affecting activities at the facility.

According to the Head of Staff at the hospital, Elvis Akuamoah, the hospital's Out Patient Department(OPD) is gradually being taken over by private developers.

"Somebody claims the Psychiatric OPD is standing on a private property and he would demolish the building anytime he is ready,"he stated.

He stressed that, the strike is the only option left after five years of deliberation with government over the issue  yielded no results.

"We are asking government to compulsorily make sure that the frontage of the hospital is left for its purpose,"he told Citi News.

He added that, after the demonstration on Wednesday, they would not come to work until their grievances are addressed.
