Government in collaboration with the Regional Maritime University (RMU), intends to equip  and export thousands of Ghanaian youth, trained to meet international standards for seafaring activities annually, Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia has said.

This was disclosed in a speech read on his behalf by Deputy Minister for Education, Yaw Osei Adutwun during the 11th Congregation and official launch of the 10th Anniversary of the University in Accra on Saturday.

He said, the initiate forms part of President Nana Akufo-Addo’s vision to create jobs for the youth of Ghana.

“The Ministry of Transport (MOT) has set up a committee to implement the programme on job creation in the Maritime sub-sector. Under this programme, the MOT in collaboration with the RMU and the Ghana Maritime Authority will train and equip the youth in seafaring activities and operations and be exported yearly,” he stated.

Mr Bawumia hinted that it would be carried out in a manner similar to the Philippines model to bring livelihood for the youth as well as bring in foreign exchange.

“To this end, the MOT has been charged to come out with a proposal for the acquisition of the long awaited training vessel for the University as a matter of urgency,” he stated.

The Vice President also announced that, government in a bid to support RMU, recommended to the University to enter into an agreement with REDAVIA GmbH (Germany), solar energy providers, to offer renewable energy support to the University to cut down on electricity tariffs.

That should go a long way to reducing electricity tariffs, currently is putting significant strain on the University’s budget.

He congratulated the University on the launch of the 10th Anniversary celebrations and the graduands for their efforts in the pursuit of higher academic laurels.
