Justice Sophia Akuffo faces Appointment Committee next week

The Appointment Committee of Parliament will on Monday,19 June vet the President's Chief Justice nominee, Justice Sophia Akuffo as the successor of former Chief Justice Georgina Theodora Wood.

Justice William Atuguba is currently acting as the Chief Justice following the retirement of Justice Wood. Justice Akuffo would take over the position after a successful vetting by the Appointment Committee.

Also to appear for vetting would be Irene Naa Torshie Addo for the role of the District Assembly Common Fund Administrator would also be held on Tuesday, June 20.

The Appointment Committee headed by Joseph Osei-Owusu is expected to take the two nominees through vetting as mandated by the Constitution.

Mrs. Wood retired from public service on Wednesday June 7 and currently a member of the council of state, since the advisory council to the President must also include a former Chief Justice according to the Constitution.

Mrs. Wood was the first female and longest-serving Chief Justice of Ghana.

Justice Sophia after a successful vetting, would become the second female Chief Justice of Ghana.
