The Inspector General of Police, IGP David Asante-Appeatu, and some high-ranking police personnel have been summoned before parliament over the killing of a police officer at the Kwabenya police station on Sunday, 21 January 2018.
Speaking to the media, member of the Defence and Interior Committee in Parliament Ernest Norgbey, stated ahead of their meeting that the encounter will afford the legislators a chance to question the security personnel on the safety of the citizenry as far as fighting crime is concerned.
The police in Accra have begun a manhunt for the seven suspects who were freed from police custody by a gang of six armed robbers who attacked the Kwabenya Police Station.
Also, the Accra Regional Police Commander, DCOP George Mensah has revealed more details surrounding the Sunday dawn attack on officers at the Kwabenya Atomic Hills Police Station.
DCOP Mensah, disclosed in an interview on Adom FM’s Morning Show, “Dwaso Nsem†that there were six officers on duty when the attack happened.
His comments run contrary to earlier reports that suggested there was only one Counter NCO at the charge office when the attack happened.
The commander said the officers were taken unawares, adding that “even though they were armed, they were not ready to engage in a battle†explaining why the officers could not combat the gunmen.
Kwabenya Police shooting: Breakdown in security not true -Minister
Meanwhile, the Deputy Interior Minister Henry Quartey has dismissed assertions that the security apparatus of the country has broken down after the shooting of a police officer at the Kwabenya Police station over the weekend.
Henry Quartey who visited the Kwabenya Police Station to ascertain the real situation on the grounds said there has not been a breakdown in the country’s security apparatus despite some reported cases of police shooting by armed robbers recently.
According to him, Government is working hard to secure the needed logistics as promised during the 2016 electioneering period for them to be able to adequately combat crime in the country.
