Kwabenya Shooting: Police arrest another escapee

Emmanuel Kotey an escapee in the Kwabenya Shooting has been arrested at Asikasu near Asamankese in the Lower West Akyem Municipality of the Eastern Region.

The  Kwabenya Shooting which occurred in January led to the killing of a police officer at the Kwabenya Police Station.

According to ASP Ebenezer Tetteh who confirmed the arrest told journalists that,  the escapee was arrested as a result of police-community collaboration.

“He was arrested as a result of police-community collaboration and we are handing him over to Accra as soon as possible to continue with the police investigations because the offense was committed in Accra,” he said.

Meanwhile, an Accra Circuit Court presided over by Justice Aboagye Tandoh, on February 14, 2018, sentenced Prince Osei and Atta Kojo to 60 months imprisonment each for their role in the Kwabenya cell break that led to the shooting and killing of one police officer.

The two were convicted based on their own plea and expected to run concurrently.
According to the court, habeas corpus would have been expected but for clemency pleaded for and on behalf of the accused by Counsel George Asumani who acted as a friend to the court.

Touching on the bail application proposed by counsels for the remaining suspects, the court said it was giving the prosecutor, Superintendent Kweku Bempah, the last opportunity to conclude his investigations on the matter to enable the court proceed on the merit of the case

Kwabenya shooting: 10 Plead Not Guilty

An Accra Circuit Court in January convicted two of the accused persons in the Kwabenya shooting and cell break incident based on their own plea whereas 10 pleaded not guilty to the charges of levelled against them by the Police.

The two others Prince Osei and Atta Kwadwo told the Accra Circuit Court One presided over by his Honour Aboagye Tandoh that they accept the charges against them.

 

All 12 have been charged with a total of five counts namely possessing of firearms without authority, abetment to possessing firearm without lawful authority, conspiracy to commit crime to wit; Escape from lawful custody, escape from lawful custody, and abetment to escape from lawful custody all of which is contrary to section 23, 226(C) and 20(1) of the Criminal and Other Offenses Act (Act 29).
