Member of Parliament's Subsidiary Legislation Committee, Shaibu Mahama has hinted that some MPs are gathering signatures to strike out the new LI which seeks to legalize both entrance examination and subsequent interviews organized for law students by the General Legal Council.

Shaibu Mahama said the Parliament's Subsidiary Legislation Committee have listened to both the law students and the General Legal Council and it's likely they will not pass the new LI.

Shaibu Mahama in a radio interview said he was very confident the attempt to get two-third signatures to strike out the LI will surely materialize as he stated that he will also vote against the LI because that is what his constituents want.

Ghana School of Law will not admit new law students

Ghana School of Law has indicated that the school will not admit new students if the new Legislative Instrument that will enable them to conduct exams for the students to cut down intake is not passed by Parliament.

According to Ghana School of Law and the General Legal Council, the passage of the LI will legalize the school's regulations in terms of intake of new students.

The Supreme Court has last year ruled that both entrance examinations and subsequent interview for entry into the Ghana School of Law to pursue professional law course was unconstitutional and directed the school to formulate an LI that will make the regulations for entry into the school constitutional.

The LI was laid before Parliament but was later withdrawn from Parliament by the Attorney General.

But the lawyer for the Association of law students Kofi Bentil before the Subsidiary Legislation Committee of Parliament on Wednesday, February 14 said the passing of the LI will turn to legalize what the Supreme Court has described as unconstitutional.

According to him, the passage of the LI will restrict access to law education in the country.
