An Accra High Court has granted bail to the Lebanese national, Rabih Haddad, alleged to have raped his Ghanaian house help.
According to the court presided over by Justice Kofi Dorgu, enough time has been given to the prosecution to gather evidence, but they have failed to do so, hence the decision.
The judge further dismissed the argument by the prosecution that the accused person could abscond if granted bail.
The accused person was granted bail to the tune of five hundred thousand cedis (GHc500,000) with two sureties to be justified.
He is also to deposit his passport with the registrar of the court.
Rabih Haddad, 39, who took ill in December after his arrest, has been on admission at the Police Hospital till date.
Suspect’s wife weeps in court
The wife of Rabih Haddad, the 39-year-old Lebanese Businessman accused of raping his 19-year-old domestic help, wept uncontrollably in court as the case was adjourned to January 9.
The wife of the accused had her hopes gushed when an Accra High Court adjourned the hearing of the bail application at the instance of the prosecution because the State Attorney assigned to the matter was indisposed.
The woman who could not control her tears broke down at the court drawing sympathy from some of the audience.
Background
The suspect Rabih Haddad has been accused to have lured the nineteen-year-old house help into one of the bedrooms and tried having sexual intercourse with her when his wife and other occupants of the house had gone out.
Her attempts to resist his advances reportedly infuriated Haddad, who slapped her and then struck her neck after which he dragged her to the bed and forcibly had sex with her.
