The minority in Parliament stormed out of Parliament after they disagreed with the move to debate the report of the Committee which investigated the alleged $100k extortion by the Ministry of Trade and Industry.

According to the minority, since they just received copies of the report, it is inappropriate to do any comprehensive debate on it.

Trade Minister, Alan Kyerematen and officials of the Ministry of Trade and Industry were today, cleared of any wrongdoing by the  5-member ad hoc committee of Parliament following extortion allegations made against the ministry.

The 5-member Committee while presenting a 146-page report to Parliament for approval, February 6, 2018, stated: “… After the hearings and the analysis and evaluation of the evidence adduced before it has come to a conclusion that there is no merit in the allegations levelled against the Ministry of Trade and Industry as contained in the Motion and which culminated in the setting up of the Special Committee.”

The committee further recommended that the Controller and Accountant General and the Ministry of Finance should consider in the formulation of the new Regulation of the PFM Act, adequate provision to cater for public-private partnership arrangement and emerging or contemporary issues.

They also recommended that the practice of some Members of Parliament trooping to the media to make allegations against highly placed officials must cease.

The committee further suggested that "MP's who indulge in such acts ought not to be heard in Parliament if they should thereafter bring those matters before Parliament for Parliament to deliberate on the matter.”

Minority Leader Haruna Iddrisu submitted on the floor of parliament that there was no need to rush the report since MPs are yet to study it.

“I got a copy of my report only this morning and it’s only fair and proper… why the rush and why are you in a hurry? A 146-page report in the interest of transparency and accountability, this matter cannot be railroaded through Parliament.

The Minority leader under Order 80 (1) of The Standing Orders of Parliament prayed for more time but boycotted the debate on the report and staged a walkout after the Speaker of Parliament denied their request for ample time to peruse the 146-page document.
