The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA), Dr Samuel Annor, has given assurrance that despite the financial challenges of the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS), the government will not allow it to collapse.

The CEO said the NHIA is working towards a point where every Ghanaian will have free medicinal care.

Dr. Annor had underscored the need for the country to take a serious look at the financing module of the Scheme to prevent it from collapse.

He said, “We have been broke for many years now because of the financing module”.

NHIS, which started with about seven million people registered in 2009, began piling up debt from 2010 as a result of the increased number of persons registered.

From the initial subscribers in 2009, the Scheme now has about 11.5 million people registered but without a corresponding increase in the funds available.

Speaking in an exclusive interview on Onua FM’s Yen Nsempa hosted by Bright Kwasi Asempa on Wednesday, Dr. Annor assured that “we shall not allow the NHIS to collapse…not under the watch of H. E. President Akufo-Addo”.
