Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Eugene Nyavor of the Documentation Fraud Unit of the Ghana Police has advised banks to engage experts to monitor their control systems to prevent fraud.

Speaking to journalists after the arrest of a Nigerian businessman who allegedly hacked into the e-mail of a bank (name withheld) to steal GH¢25,000, he also urged banks to ensure that they get authorisation from customers before allowing withdrawal of huge sums of money.

The suspect, Godwin Onwunema Udu,who according to ASP Nyavor, has another ongoing fraud case at the Unit,  was on July 19, arrested by the management of the bank and handed over to the police.

Udu had successfully hacked into the bank’s e-mail account and transferred the money from a customer’s account but the bank detected the fraud and mounted a surveillance which led to his arrest at Haatso, Accra, branch of another bank, while he was trying to withdraw money from his account.

ASP Nyavor said, he had been charged for stealing and would soon be put before court, The Ghanaian Times reported.
