Four people from Alavanyo died, last year, after eating food prepared with puffer fish, known locally as “Gedde”.

However, the Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) after investigating the matter in 2017 alleged that the victims of the food poisoning incident in Alavanyo in the Volta Region were aware that the fish they consumed is not meant to be eaten.

Puffer Fish

Almost all pufferfish contain tetrodotoxin, a substance that makes them foul tasting and often lethal to humans, tetrodotoxin is deadly, up to 1,200 times more poisonous than cyanide.

There is enough toxin in one pufferfish to kill 30 adult humans, and there is no known antidote.
