The Ghana Police Service has, with immediate effect, brought all police related activities at Donkorkrom in the Kwahu East District of the Eastern Region to a halt.

All police officers in stationed in the area have also been directed to go off duty until further notice.

The directive comes after irate residents of Donkorkrom burnt down the police station in the town during a demonstration over the escape of two police officers who had been arrested in connection with the robbery of GCB Bank bullion van at Maame Krobo last Tuesday in which one died.

Residents, who believed the suspects were aided in escaping by their colleagues, took to the streets saying they were better of protecting themselves leading to clashes with the police.

The car believed to have been used in the unsuccessful robbery which had been impounded by the police in the neighbouring town of Tease was also burnt by angry residents.

Speaking at a press conference in Accra on Friday, the Inspector General of Police (IGP), John Kudalor disclosed that until the items destroyed during the altercation are replaced by the residents, the area will have no police presence.
