The Pro-Vice-Chancellor of the University of Cape Coast, Prof. George Oduro has admonished government to restrict workers from gaining access to Whatsapp during working hours.
This he believes will aid workers to concentrate and work effectively as the Social media platform has been a major form of distraction since its inception.
Speaking at the 5th quadrennial (52nd) National Delegates’ Conference of the Ghana National Association of Teachers held at the University of Cape Coast on January 5th, 2018, Prof Oduro explained that it will be difficult for the nation to maximise the benefits of equitable investments in education when teachers waste teaching hours using social media and doing other unnecessary things.
"Equitable investments in education will be meaningless if the teacher in the classroom does not act proportionately to the investment. If teachers do not use their teaching time well, if they spend teaching hours browsing, sending WhatsApp messages, etc then we cannot maximise the benefit of equitable distribution.", he stressed.
Prof Oduro in suggesting a solution proposed that government should restrict access to Whatsapp during working hours. " And I'm tempted to propose this for consideration: Government could put a restriction on access to Whatsapp during working days so that you only gain access to Whatsapp after working hours. I think this is something we need to do.
He added that the Free SHS policy, though credible has created room for equity-related problems in schools - a situation which could have been avoided if government had been more careful in its planning and strategizing before implementing the program.
Prof Oduro stressed the importance of investing in education and ensuring that politics and personal interests interrupt the provision of excellent education for the youth of the country.
