A Toyota Land Cruiser vehicle registered in the name of the state and believed to be among the numerous state vehicles which are allegedly missing has been found at a sprayers workshop.

The workshop, it was gathered, is located somewhere around the Kwabenya vicinity in Accra but the workers are tight-lipped on who brought the car there.

From the look of photos in our possession and published below, the 4x4 licensed GV 57-16 was going undergoing a total makeover as it was being re-sprayed in a likely move to disguise the car from being noticed and possibly being retrieved by government's task force.

The government of President Nana Akufo-Addo on February 3, set up a task force made up of officials from the Ghana Police Service, the Ghana Revenue Authority, the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority(DVLA), the Bureau of National Investigations(BNI), and the office of the President to retrieve state properties including landed properties and vehicles which some appointees of the outgone NDC administration had refused to hand over.

“The general public is also hereby encouraged to provide information on any properties believed to be within the above-mentioned category to the task-force via ‘Task-force on Retrieval of State Assets, the CID Headquarters, Accra, on 0299012238", a statement signed by the Chief of Staff, Akosua Frema Osei-Opare announcing the setting up of the task force stated.

A few days later, Acting Communications Director at the Presidency, Eugene Arhin while explaining the necessity of the assets task force in an interview hinted that over 200 vehicles belonging to the state which had been designated as part of the presidential car pool had gone missing.

The situation, he said, had led President Akufo-Addo to use a ten-year-old BMW and sometimes use his personal car when travelling outside Accra.

“Just this last week Saturday, the president had o use his private Land Cruiser for an official duty in Kyebi. That is the same Land Cruiser he used during the campaign time” he stated.

Former deputy Chief of Staff in the former government, Johnny Osei Kofi vehemently rejected Mr Arhin's claims with the release of a detailed report complete with chassis numbers of 641 cars which they had left at the presidency and asked Mr Arhin to do same for the supposed missing cars

This led some functionaries of the NDC to describe Mr Arhin's claims as just a way of preparing the minds of Ghanaians as the government wanted to buy a new fleet of  Benz cars for the President's use.

Former Deputy Minster of Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu was of the opinion that since they left a lot of cars at the presidency including four armoured vehicles for the use of the President, the use of the 2007 BMW or his personal car was only a matter of choice or were just lies.

The finding of this car gives credence to the fact that some state vehicles have found their way into the hands of some people who would do everything within their might to keep them, however, the question as to why one would still be keeping the number plate embossed on the car if they wanted to steal it must be answered.
