The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) as part of the National Sanitation Campaign, has announced to the general public that there will be a clean-up exercise in all the 10 sub-Metros of the Assembly on Saturday, 3 March 2018.

A statement signed by Sam Ayeh-Datey, Metro Coordinating Director, said: “In respect of this, all residents, departments and agencies; corporate organizations, markets, drivers, opinion leaders, traditional authorities, teachers, students, and pupils are enjoined to come out with their cleansing tools to clean their respective communities, places of work, homes, and surroundings.

“In pursuance of this, there will be a vigorous enforcement of the AMA (Environmental Sanitation Day), bye-laws, 1995. Shops, markets, and other commercial activities must remain closed between the hours of 6:00 am and 10:00 am.

“These bye-laws further direct transport operators to ‘undertake a general cleaning of all lorry parks and bus stations’, with minimum movement of vehicles except those of emergency and security services.

“The AMA will appreciate if Residents, Traders, and Transport Operators will seize this opportunity to clean their respective areas to assist the AMA to achieve the President’s vision of ‘Making Accra the Cleanest City in Africa’. Public Health Officers (Saman Saman) will be visiting households and entities to inspect their sanitation condition and issue notices (summons) if necessary during this period.”

Sanitation Problem will not be fixed overnight- Kofi Adda

Minister of Sanitation and Water resources, Joseph Kofi Adda earlier this month urged Ghanaians not to expect that the huge sanitation problems in the country will be fixed overnight.

His comment came on the heels of calls by some Ghanaians who demanded the dismissal of the Sanitation Minister over his failure to deal with sanitation issues in the country a year after his appointment. The calls for the Minister to be sacked intensified after he recently assigned people to clean up refuse near the Australian High Commission right after the High Commissioner's tweet went viral.

Joseph Kofi Adda who dismissed calls for his dismissal insisting he has been effective assured that Accra will be the cleanest city by the middle of this year.

“The overnight solution people are looking for in the Sanitation Ministry you’ll not get that… You want the Minister to go out there tomorrow with a broom and wheelbarrow to collect the waste, that’s not the Minister’s job. I think they have to go back and understand what is the role of the Minister to start with and how should he collaborate with the others.

“I bet you, by the middle of this year, you’ll find a totally transformed sanitation sector in this country that will last the test of time and that’s where I’ll be most effective.”
