UCC clash: Police grants 22 students bail

The Central Regional Police command has granted bail to the 22 students arrested by the command in relation to the clash on the campus of the University of Cape Coast last week.

The police has picked up the students to help with investigations with regards to the clash that resulted in the stabbing of 3 students and other school properties been damaged last week.


Speaking to Radio Ghana the Public Relations Officer of the regional command Irene Oppong stated that the students were granted bail with sureties.


“With the public order Act if you organise a program and you notify the police, the organisers have the responsibility that is stated in the Public Order Act they are to make sure that they educate people who are going to participate in safety and their limits and where they are supposed to have the program so in the Public Order Act the organisers have the responsibility which they were supposed to make sure that the program was peaceful so we’ve invited them and they have taken…..from them and we have granted them bail to their Hall masters, each of them are to bring their parents or a guardian to come in as a surety for them.”


According to her the police service would not hesitate if the need be to carry the investigations to the other visiting schools [University of Ghana and Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology].


“Police we need information and we the police we still gathering information from statements that we are collecting around and if these statements find the cause that we move to other sister universities if they were involved in any criminal activity why not.”


The school authorities have also banned some major activities during hall week on the university campus such as beauty pageants, town floats and health walks.
