General Secretary of the Public Utility Workers Union of the Trade Union Congress, Michael Nyantakyi says the group will from today embark on a 3 hours demonstration at all regional and district offices of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG).

According to Mr. Nyantakyi, the demonstration is to register their displeasure with the Millennium Challenge Corporation Compact regarding handing out management of ECG to a different entity for some years.

“The cabinet decision only provides a guarantee of 5 years, that the private investor should not undertake mass redundancy but the big question is what happens after 5 years.

“The MMC compact would have ended by that time and Ghana government or Ghanaians would have to pay for the cost of any redundancy if it handed over to the private sector because it would have to be reflected in the tariff” he declared.

He urged government to review the MMC agreement adding “we are requesting the government of Ghana and MMC to review the compact, the private sector participation as a condition precedent and a trigger for the entering in force of the compact should be modified.”
