The Aviation Minister Cecelia Dapaah has warned British Airways to improve their services to Ghanaians or be penalized.

The minister complained about poor treatment given to Ghanaian passengers by the British Airways irrespective of the fact that they have enjoyed monopoly over the Ghana-UK direct flight market for more than 80 years.

According to the Aviation Minister, reports of bed bugs in some of the British Airways flight is now a great source of worry to some Ghanaian passengers hence the Airline must come out to explain and reassure that such incidence will not occure again.

The Aviation Minister, Cecelia Dapaah’s comment follows a report by some British media that a British Airways flight bound to Accra was grounded at London's Heathrow Airport for four hours after bed bugs were found crawling on the seats.

The cabin crew had walked out minutes before the scheduled take-off when they discovered the infestation, on Sunday.

Speaking in an emergency meeting with some officials of the British Airways, the minister said “It is very disheartening that British Airways that has had a clear monopoly of direct flights to London will treat Ghanaian this way; it is unacceptable, and we demand serious explanations and we need to have your reassurance that this incidence will never ever occur,” she stated.

She added some Ghanaian passengers have also complained about being moved from Terminal 5 to Terminal 3 at Heathrow which is frustrating for them.

“Again, I’ve had figures and I don’t know why we pay so much for our direct flight vis-à-vis our Nigerian neighbours,” the Minister said.

She noted that the Ministry needs also clarification on why Ghanaian passengers pay as much as 1,300 pounds for its direct flights from Accra – London whereas Nigeria pays only 900 pounds.
