The onset of the breast cancer awareness campaigns for the month of October has seen many organizations and individuals contributing to the ongoing discussions as well as embarking on ways to ensure the reduction of the canker.

Upon the advice of some health experts over the years, men have been urged to help their wives and girlfriends fight breast cancer by regularly assisting them to examine their breasts.

“The men should also suckle the women’s breasts. Don’t allow your wife to get breast cancer. Sucking of the breast is also good,” the celebrated midwife Madam Mary Azika said at a seminar organised by the Upper East Regional Chapter of the Distance Education Students Association of Ghana (DESAG) of the University of Cape Coast (UCC).

A recent counsel by the president of Breast Care International, Dr Beatrice Wiafe Addai, however, debunked the claim that sucking of the breasts reduces the risk of breast cancer. She advised that breastfeeding is good for women but grown men must handle the breasts with extra care due to its fragile nature.

So what do Ghanaians make of these claims and counter-claims? PrimenewsGhana hit the streets to find out.
