A pregnant woman in labour died at Gor Kukani in the Zabzugu district after attempts to reach a hospital proved futile due to a collapsed bridge.

Reports say the bridge collapsed after a torrential downpour the led the river to overflow its banks.

The woman, Nakoja Njonam Tigynam, was being taken to hospital in Zabzugu but the collapsed bridge delayed attempts to get there in time.

The bridge links Gor Kukani and other surrounding villages to Zabzugu the district capital.

The deceased’s husband’s brother, Waaja Akwesi, in an interview said her sister “was to deliver and was referred to the district hospital and on the way we had to cross the bridge but because of the level of the water, we delayed in crossing and upon reaching the hospital the baby died in her womb and later the woman also passed on and we brought her home and buried her.”

Residents say they are unable to go to the market and Zabzugu when they need to access healthcare. They also say they do not have canoes to cross the river  as the water is deep.“
