Smoothies and fruit juices have long been thought to be the better choice for the health conscious but new advice from experts suggest otherwise.

Smoothies, fruit juices and some foods such as yoghurts are set to be the new focus of health officials in an attempt to cut the amount of sugar we eat.

The news comes after scientist’s claims that sugars found in fruit juices may be as bad for your health as sugars found in soft drinks.

The concern mainly focuses around free sugars which are usually added to processed foods and drinks such as soft drinks.

However it is now suggested that products that contain fruit that has been processed should be included in the same category because the “cellular structure of the fruit or vegetable had broken down” according to The Telegraph.

This news will mean that anyone wanting to limit their sugar intake will have to reconsider smoothies and other fruit products as part of their diet.

It’s not bad news for all fruit based products though. Sugars found in stewed, canned and dried fruit and vegetable products are not classed as ‘free sugars’ and are therefore a healthier alternative.
