8 interesting things Mahama said in his Metro TV interview

President John Mahama took time off his busy schedule to sit with Metro TV's Paul Adom Otchere and answer questions in key national issues.

1. Montie 3 verdict was harsh
The president said there was general consensus that the Supreme Court verdict which sentenced the Montie 3 to four months in jail was harsh. Montie 3

President Mahama said he extended his prerogative of mercy to the Montie three because they had apologised for their actions. 

2. Akufo-Addo "insulted" him
He rejected assertions that he was taking the focus off key issues in his December election campaign by attacking Akufo-Addo personally. According to him, the NPP leader attacked him first by calling him a thief.

“He, Nana Addo, attacked attacked me first. For four years he has described me as incompetent, for four years he’s described me as visionless, for four years he’s described me as a thief.

“He says when he comes to power he won’t steal the country's money, what does that mean? It means I am stealing Ghanaians’ money."

3. Donald Trump
He declined to provide his view on US Republican presidential candidate, Donald Trump. According to him, it is the US electorate which has right to determine whether they like him or not. He added, however, that as a “social democrat”, some of the policies he espouses differ from those of Donald Trump who upholds centre right philosophies. 

4. Ford Expedition 
The president said his receipt of a Ford Expedition vehicle from a Burkina Faso businessman (who subsequently won two lucrative government contracts) was not a bribe. He added that he would accept the verdict of the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ) which has launched an investigation into the matter.

5. Health
President Mahama said his campaign would not focus on the health of his rivals. His remarks come after a report by Africa Watch magazine claimed that Akufo-Addo had cancer. Mahama said he would rather campaign on his track record than on Akufo-Addo's perceived health condition.

6. Fit as a fiddle
He said he was very fit and strong and that he was ready to make his medical report available if the there was public consensus to that effect.

7. WASSCE results
He said although this year's WASSCE results was better than those of previous years, the government was still not satisfied and wanted to see a drastic improvement.

8. Teacher Trainee Allowances
President Mahama said the government did not terminate teacher trainee allowances, but merely substituted with the Students Loan scheme.
