Ghana's Former High Commissioner to the United Kingdom Victor Smith says his checks on the ground indicate that about 90% of NDC members want John Mahama back to lead the party to recapture power in 2020.

According to Victor Smith, despite the embarrassing the defeat the NDC led by John Mahama in the 2016 election, 9 out of 10 NDC members believe strongly that he will be the party’s best bet to attain victory in the upcoming 2020 elections.

Speaking to Kwabena Kyenkyenhene Boateng on '21 minutes with KKB', Victor Smith said, "I’m on the ground. I can talk about what the people are looking at. About 90% of NDC people want John Mahama back. They think he did well for this country. Nine out ten people I’ve spoken to.”

Victor Smith continued that, for NDC members “they think John Mahama did well for this country but something went wrong and we would need to clean up our act”

Meanwhile, Former President John Mahama has stated his stance on how premature it is to publicize his intent on running for the presidency in 2020.

According to John Mahama, it will do the NDC party more good to work towards educating supporters on the ongoing Branch reorganization activities and use the opportunity to build up the support base of the Party in the communities than for him to declare his intention for 2020 to disrupt the process of reuniting the grassroots.

Several members of the NDC including, Nadowli-Kaleo MP, Alban Bagbin, Dr. Spio-Garbrah, former NHIA boss, Sylvester Mensah, Joshua Alabi, former MP for La-Dadekotopon, Nii Amasah Namoale among others, have given indications they may contest the flagbearership position.
