Member of Parliament (MP) for Efutu Constituency in the Central Region, Alexander Afenyo Markin has expressed delight with the 7-day extension (August 5-12 2016) of the re-registration of NHIS card registrants announced by the EC.

Mr. Markin had expressed grave concern that the EC had deleted 3,000 NHIS registrants of his constituents yet the tight time frame meant they couldn’t re-register due to faulty machines and heavy queues.

The Electoral Commission at an Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC) meeting informed the parties and stakeholders it had considered the extension calls and extended the re-registration period.

“I am not just interested in extension but I more particularly interested in how they are able to resolve the logistical problems that experienced in the phase one of the re-registration.

“My particular concern is the mode of registration” he told Joy News.

Abu Ramadan and Evans Nimako sued the EC over the credibility of the voters’ register leading the Supreme Court to order the deletion of National Health Insurance registrants from the register. The Commission proceeded to delete over 56,772 NHIS registrants and gave a 10-day window for re-registration.

At the end of the exercise, 24,287 persons were registered out of the over 56,772 deleted names. This led to calls for a period extension so folks weren’t deliberately disenfranchised.
