President Akufo-Addo has lamented about the state of sanitation in the country, describing it as wholly unacceptable as most part of the country especially the cities are engulfed by filth.

Speaking at the 2018 State of the Nation Address in Parliament on Thursday February 8, President Akufo-Addo said: "there is the urgent need for public authorities to find means of making our cities clean, and in the case of Accra, fulfilling my pledge, one of the most ambitious of my presidency, is to make it the cleanest city in Africa, by the end of my term."

President Akufo-Addo after the assumption of office pledged to make Accra the cleanest city in Africa for which he will equip the Sanitation Ministry to carry out the plans of lifting Accra and Ghana above filth.

According to him, government is working with various private sector operators to tackle this major challenge, with strategies that are intended to effect a change in our attitudes towards waste generation, as well as to improve dramatically our methods of waste management.

But one year in office there is not much development in the sanitation sector for which some Ghanaians are calling for the head of the Sanitation Minister Kofi Addae.

After recounting the sanitation challenges, President Akufo-Addo said: "we expect for example the provision of water and toilets to feature prominently in the agenda of the Development Authorities until those two items can be taken off the must-do list of all constituencies around the country."

He added that the enforcement of rules and regulations in the sanitation sector will help immensely the fight against filth, and Urgent attention will be given to clearing of rubbish all around the country.

"This will be complemented by the strict enforcement of sanitation rules and regulations."

The Accra Metropolitan Assembly through the Judiciary has established special courts to prosecute individuals who fall short of the sanitation rules and also serve as a deterrent to others.
