Embattled National Chairman of the Peoples National Convention Bernard Monarh has confirmed views held by many about the increasing corrupt nature of student politics on the various tertiary campuses.

A former Student Representative Council presidential aspirant at the University of Cape Coast, Mr Monarh seems worried by the increasing monetization of campaigns to positions on campus by the interested candidates.

He said the practice only emboldens most of the students who end up in national politics to steal when they get the chance to hold positions at the national level.

Both the NPP and NDC have been accused of meddling in student politics and have always invested thousands of Ghana Cedis. The two main political parties have been accused of meddling in students politics, and sponsoring candidates to various positions including that National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS), where they are dictated to as to how to run their administrations.

Speaking on Asempa Fm’s afternoon political show Ekosii Sen, Mr Monarh wondered how students who are struggling to raise money to pay their fees will print out “flamboyant” posters for their campaigns on campus.

“The quality of their banners just to become SRC and NUGS Presidents is beyond the reach of ordinary pocket,” he said. “They are going round begging for money.”

According to him, most of these students are the very same persons who end up in national politics and are able to extend their acquired greed from campus to their positions.

Mr Monarh said the acrimonious nature of the campaigns even end up wrecking homes and families, and the authorities should begin taking steps towards finding a solution to it.

“ I am hoping and praying that we will get there,” he added.
