There was a low voter turnout in the Abetifi by-election on Saturday as only 35.55% of registered voters turning up and the New Patriotic Party snatched victory easily.

Out of the 43, 823 registered voters, only 15, 329 people came out to cast their votes with the NPP's Bryan Acheampong polling 14,015 votes to win overwhelmingly.

Vida Konadu Ennin of the Independent People’s Party (IPP) polled 469 votes as against 439 votes for Edmund Ofori Nkansah of the Convention People’s Party (CPP). The United Front Party’s (UFP) Kenneth Kotey Nikoi had 406 votes.

The low turnout and the overwhelming NPP victory could be attributed to the National Democratic Congress' (NDC) decision not to partake in the by-election which became necessary because of the death of the previous MP, Peter Wiafe Pepra who died aged 62 at the 37 Military Hospital on May 21 after a short illness.Â
