Inusah Fuseini, member of Parliament for Tamale Central is of the view that the arrest of Koku Anyidoho by CID of the Ghana Police Service was the cheapest way the State exercised its authority.
According to Inusah Fuseini, the arresting the Deputy General Secretary of the opposition NDC should not have been the immediate decision of the Police.
The CID of the Ghana Police Service on Tuesday, March 27, 2018, picked up Koku Anyidoho, Deputy General Secretary of Opposition NDC.
The CID of the Ghana Police Service stormed the International Press Center in Accra to arrest Koku Anyidoho for allegedly making some treasonable comments.
According to Koku Anyidoho in a radio interview said he still believes there will be a civilian coup d'etat to remove the Akufo-Addo government in the near future.
Speaking in an interview on Starr FM, Koku Anyidoho explained that there is nothing wrong with a civil coup if it means taking back Ghana's sovereignty.
However, speaking on Joy FM’s News Analysis Show Newsfile, Inusah Fuseini said, much as the Police admitted that Koku’s Statement was potentially treasonable, the remedy was not to arrest him but rather activate the state intelligence gathering system to peruse the activities Koku Anyidoho that could have informed his speech.
"When Koku made the speech in exercise of his freedom of speech, the speech might be morally reprehensible, it might offend the sensibility of some people, it might even invoke emotional consideration in the case of the President, that was his father who was overthrown. But is it treasonable? if the state is of the view that his speech was potentially treasonable, what they need to do was not to arrest Koku, is to activate the intelligence system to see what activities Koku would be engaged in that is likely to subvert the constitution of Ghana, but not arrest him. Arresting him is the callous exercise of State authority"
He added that, if the state continue to pick up people for comments they make rather than setting into motion an intelligence gathering system when such comments are made by citizens then the state will always be at the losing end.
