Private legal practitioner John Ndebugre has predicted the possibility of Martin Amidu who has been appointed special prosecutor leaving office after before his 7 year term.

John Ndebugre said there are so many contradictions in the Act establishing the office of the special prosecutor which will give rise to many conflict situations.

According to him, the Act creates a board mandated to oversee the works of the office and the special prosecutor as the CEO will have to report to the board. This he believes could create some issues especially where Martin Amidu and the board are at variance on an issue.

Explaining further the conflict situation created by the Act, John Ndebugre noted that the board will at all times want to stamp its authority while the special prosecutor being Martin Amidu will also want to prove his independence.

John Ndebugre noted there is nothing special about the office of the special prosecutor because Martin Amidu has been a prosecutor before and lost cases, so the new office will not change much.

Akufo-Addo holding a lion by the tail

NDC MP for Tamale Central, Inusah Fuseini, has said President Akufo-Addo by appointing Martin Amidu as a special prosecutor is "holding a lion by the tail."

A local proverb, a caution to the President by the MP which literally means Martin Amidu by nature will fight corruption at every level including the ones at the doorstep of the President.

About the Office of the Special Prosecutor

President Akufo Addo on January 2, 2018, assented the Special Prosecutor Bill.

According to the President, the new law formed part of the most important elements of the NPP's 2016 Manifesto, on which the NPP was elected into office, and it had now found legislative expression.

In an effort to stamp out corruption in the country, Akufo- Addo made a campaign promise in 2016, to create the office of the Special Prosecutor to bring corrupt officials to book.

The bill was then passed by parliament in November 2017 after its third reading.
