Deputy Minority Spokesperson on employment, Richard Quashigah has described the Nation Builders Corps as a programme which will at best secure employment for NPP footsoldiers.

According to him, the programme which was announced in the 2018 budget is not needed since there is an existing framework such as the Youth Employment Authority for the creation of jobs.

Speaking in a radio interview, the Keta MP said the initiative is a ridiculous attempt to deal with the challenge of youth unemployment in the country.

"For me, I don't see the real impact of the policy, it is a mere duplication. What it means is that we're gonna create new structures to handle something that is already done under the existing Youth employment programme, which also engages graduates," he said.

He further added that the program which will cost GH¢50 million is unnecessary, saying "Except it is intended to create a special programme for party foot soldiers who probably have graduated from the universities and other tertiary institutions and there is need to give them some special attention".

During the reading of the 2018 budget, Finance minister Ken Ofori Atta revealed that as a way to curb graduate unemployment in the country, government will through Nation Builders Corps program employ 100,000 graduates in various districts across the country. On average, under the program, every district should be able to provide jobs for 462 graduates.

Policy think tank IMANI recently shared similar concerns as the Deputy minority speaker, describing the Nation Builders Corps policy as a disappointment.

Meanwhile, government will soon present a detailed policy statement on the nation builders programme to parliament.
