Parliamentary nominee of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Tamale North constituency, Alhassan Suhuyini has implied that voters of northern extraction must show their love for John Dramani Mahama and never allow a situation where he would not win handsomely in northern Ghana be repeated.
Suhuyini, who made his name by hosting Radio Gold's morning show and crucially its ‘Alhaji & Alhaji’ show observed at the Northern School of Business (NOBISCO), where he had gone to present relief items that Jerry John Rawlings, John Agyekum Kufuor and Late Mills all benefited from their home regions.
“When a Voltarian stood to be President, the whole of Volta Region voted for him until he stopped being President, Jerry John Rawlings. And when Ashanti man stood to be President the whole of Ashanti Region rallied behind him until he stopped to become President, President Kufuor. When Professor Atta Mills decided to run for President the whole of central region, his home region, voted massively for him before he could win in 2008, and do you know the sad news? When John Mahama from the northern region decided to be President in 2012, the NDC in northern region lost 11 constituencies.
“For the first time in the history of this country in the fourth Republic, we had a President who won to be President without the support of his home region†the soft yet keen media man pointed out.
Deputy Communications Director of the NPP, Anthony Karbo however found Suhuyini's comments to be steeped in ethnic allegiance rather than good works winning one votes.
“The comments of Mr. Suhuyini are quite unfortunate and must be condemned. They are reckless and in fact, goes to insult our very existence as a people and he must bow down his head in shame. He talks about the fact that Rawlings comes from the Volta Region and Voltarians voted for him but Northerners voted massively for Rawlings as well†he averred on Eyewitness News.
