The New Patriotic Party (NPP) does not see Northerners as fit to assume any top leadership role within their party, President John Mahama has said.

According to him, the NPP only uses people of Northern extraction to do the party’s difficult works and abandon them when it comes to filling leadership positions as they are using their Vice Presidential Candidate, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia now.

Just like the late vice President Aliu Mahama was frustrated by the contest  of 16 other candidates when he tried to succeed former President John Kufuor in 2007, so will Bawumia be stopped if he tried to become a flagbearer of the NPP, he said while addressing a rally at Lawra as part of his campaign tour of the Upper West region.

“I want to live to see the day; you let anything happen today and let our brother Bawumia say he is standing for president in NPP. They will never give it to him, I can assure you".

He, therefore, warned Northern supporters of the NPP to be wary of the political choice they have made because it would lead them nowhere.

“Sometimes I feel sad when I see some of our Northern brothers running around and also doing this (the change sign), they will use you and dump you,” President Mahama warned.

Going into the history books, President Mahama stated that the fact that leadership of the newly formed UP went to members of the UGCC rather than the Northern People’s Party which had a majority in parliament shows they NPP tradition thought of Northerners.
