President Nana Akufo-Addo has challenged the chiefs at his home town, Akyem Abuakwa and Kyebi in the Eastern region to be actively involved in the fight against galamsey.

Kyebi and some areas in the region are some of the prime locations for  galamsey activities which have heavily polluted some of Ghana's most important water bodies, the Birim and Pra rivers and some farmlands.

The President who was speaking at a Durbar to mark this year's Ogun festival at Kyebi, said government would not tolerate any form of illegal mining in the area and the chiefs must help fight the menace.

Nana Akufo-Addo stressed government would allow the activities of the few people who seek to engage in the illegality to destroy the land to fester anymore, to the detriment of the entire nation.

He urged the chiefs, who are custodians of the land to put in place measures to stop illegal mining and safeguard their own lands even before government enacts and implement laws to protect the country's natural resources.

Okyehene,Osagyefo Amoatia Ofori Panin II in his response said, the President must address developmental issues affecting the country.

He added that, arrogant and bossy appointees of government must be reined in, to prevent them from giving the Akufo-Addo administration a bad name.
