Former President Jerry John Rawlings is being suggested by some posters which have surfaced on social media as a likely candidate for the position of National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), a party he founded.

The poster comes with a picture of the former president, with the inscription: "Papa J for National Chairman. Probity and Accountability".

The source of the posters is not known, but it is obvious that whoever that may be, wants the founder to restore the party's values of integrity, probity and accountability.

Having convincingly lost last year's general elections to the New Patriotic Party (NPP), the NDC has been left wondering what caused their abysmal performance.

While many supporters blamed their national executives and government appointees for not doing enough to retain power, some blamed former President Rawlings for his seemingly apathetic attitude towards the party's campaign which they say persuaded his numerous fans from voting.

But in Mr Rawlings' opinion, the party lost the elections because the leadership had lost the core values that endeared the NDC to the masses

"…Some handlers and manipulators, who have profited from our past two governments want to promote a lie about the reasons for our failures in order to perpetuate their hold on the NDC party."I don't think I was the only one who saw the writing on the wall. Many people from our very own party I believe, could see the writing on the wall that we were going to lose this past election. It was obvious a long time ago that we wouldn’t make it. Our general negativity, impunity, disrespect and corruption was taking us further and further downhill. About the time when most were living in the painful reality with stress and anger, that’s when some of us chose to be more impervious to reality. We had lost so much goodwill", he stated in his speech at the 35th Anniversary of the 31st December Revolution.

This assessment re-opened the debate of what caused the NDC's heavy defeat and reinforced calls for the leadership to be booted out though their tenure would officially come to an end in 2018.
